I wonder how many people realize that we do know what the real Bobby Fulbright was like. The phantom's impersonations are spot on; we see this during Turnabout for Tomorrow. He perfectly impersonates Solomon Starbuck, he perfectly impersonates Aristotle Means, he perfectly impersonates Phoenix.
Not to mention, in order to be convincing, he would've had to have been perfectly impersonating the real Bobby Fulbright down to the smallest personality traits and habits, especially because apparently, nobody suspected that the phantom wasn't actually Fulbright (possibly helped by his death not actually being verified until a year after the fact, since he couldn't be identified).

Insane to me when ppl criticize a mystery series having mysteries left “unfinished” at the end. Girl, it’s not “unfinished” it’s setting shit up for later, and, as someone joining in on a mystery series, you signed up for that being a possibility.
#aa opinions that annoy me#aa4 and dgs1 are not ‘unfinished’ they were meant to focus on a certain arc and set up things for a separate arc#aa4 just got shafted because capcom demanded an aa5 while Shu Takumi was too busy to write it but that’s not aa4s fault#and if you still feel that way about dgs1 knowing that it gets tied up it dgs2 youre insane#I can understand finding it worrying because of things that happen like the aa4 to aa5 transition#because gaming companies have ruined your trust#but to call it bad writing when you are playing a game you are well aware is part of a series#just sounds really short sighted#because the only alternative is to either simplify the story till it has lost so much that it isn’t the same anymore#or to haphazardly rush everything in one game#which would again take away a lot of other things and it would feel cheap#———#DGS 1 & 2 spoilers coming up#Like say whatever you want about the pacing of dgs1#(I loved it personally personally)#but so much of dgs2 would NOT have fucking hit the way it did without the character explorations in 1 and the time given to stew#If you think Kazuma dying in like episode 1 before we can get to know him at all#and then rushing Ryunosuke’s grief (which now surrounds a guy we arent nearly as endeared to) identity crisis and character development#through 1-2 1-3 and 1-4 so that you can get to a case 5 where ‘WHOAH that guy we dont know is back’#and then rush through the ruinion and brewing tension and explainations that were in 2-4 and 2-5 now into one case#…is somehow better than properly exploring Ryuu’s growth and the people & relationships he makes along the way#while letting Kazuma haunt the narrative for a good chunk of the games before suddenly being there again but not how we remember#than…idk what to say

Spoilers for Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney and Ace Attorney: Dual Destinies.
Specifically Case 1-4 and Case 5-5.
I had two main goals with this:
Give Edgeworth a reason to be invested in Blackquill's acquittal and UR-1
Highlight parallels to PW:AA so they can stop itching my brain already
I'll let the courts decide if I succeeded!

DD/AA5 sketches
(spoilers for in game dialogue and new characters)
Tumblr media
context under cut
Today I felt like doing some DD sketches with my non-preferred hand (RH means right hand) because I'm currently playing it (now up to episode 5 and just started the second trial) and, I might share my thoughts on the game when I'm done, so fair I'm mostly positive but still kinda mixed on the game :/ but I also got a lot of questions that I hope will be answered!
In other news I have now pre-ordered AAI collection for switch because I wanna make sure I got a copy as soon as it comes out! I've never played AAI 1/2 and Miles Edgeworth is my fave AA character so I'm super hyped!
now to describe wtf is going on with each sketch!:
based off first time Taka lands on Judge's head, It made me laugh for a good minute or so. If you couldn't tell I'm not used to drawing old people
Apollo once again regretting life (RIP)
a horrendous attempt at a Athena chibi... and it was my first time drawing her too :'(
Based off a real screenshot from case 3 (I think?)
Also based off a screenshot from case 3, which made me laugh a lot cuz I had been subconsciously calling him "bird man" even before Taka appears cuz he has major corvid energy XD

on my way home from the gym i had a really stupid thought of "hey it's been 7/8 years since aa7 so what if capcom reflect that by doing another fucking time skip" i then tried to roll with this bad idea and flesh it out a bit and see what it could look like
so here i present to you my version of the worst ace attorney 7 pitch in da whole wide WORLD !!!
[SPOILERS FOR AA4 AND AA6, NOT REALLY AA5 CAUSE UH NOTHING TO REALLY SPOIL I GUESS LOL?]
come 2024 it will have been 8 years since AA6 so fuck it, 7 years time skip (Again 🙄🙄🙄) to reflect that time
introducing Ace Attorney 7, or Justice & Cykes: Ace Attorneys
Apollo has been in Khurain for the past 7 years restructuring its legal system, meanwhile Phoenix has retired from law to do the same with Edgeworth (who's stayed as Chief Prosecutor) in Japanifornia. He's still acting as a mentor to Thena and is still in charge of the WAA, but doesn't take cases himself any more. Him and Polly don't really keep in touch as much as they should, as both are too busy
maybe Apollo gets homesick tho, or Phoenix offers him his old job back or what, but either way a 31 year old Polly moves back to Japanifornia to be a lawyer there again
case 1 is a tutorial for two reasons:
1) apollo hasn't done law in this country in nearly a decade
B - phoenix has reworked the WHOLE system (i.e. introduced two fun mechanics from GAA)
it should be a simple case, but the problem is that this new system nick introduced fucking baffles polly: why does he now have multiple witnesses on the stand at once? and why is there a jury system? (does this take away from GAAs unique identity? idk)
he solves it btw ofc he does, with help from his professional magician assistant trucy
at the end of the case phoenix calls polly & trucy to his office and tells them they're siblings
cut to case two, where we are focused on an Athena case (possibly set before 7-1? so as to keep the weighty cliffhanger as long as possible). trucy is assistant for this too. fuck it. she's assistant for most/all of the game. trucy deserved better in 5 and 6, capcom.
reintroduction to investigation segments, which remain unchanged. athena, now mid 20s, is a lot more confident and independent, though maybe still needs to ask for help and advice from nick more than she'd like. solves a two day case just fine, even with new prosecutor (maybe Sebastian Debeste? or a rookie who has a similar character arc to us in previous games)
case 3 back to apollo, and him and trucy are probably taking the news itself well but not the fact it took OVER A DECADE FOR NICK TO TELL THEM, and it doesn't help that nick just pins it to him being too busy and forgetting lol
either way a case has come in so the two of them take it to distract themselves but there's gonna be a little awkward tension in the air throughout especially whenever they visit thena and nick
solve it
case 3 back to thena, and her journey of independence & also now dealing with Wright family drama lol
solves case
case 4 back to polly, who's still miffed but is trying to be an adult about it
solves case
case 5 nick is suspected of murder, and trucy is witness so Apollo and Athena work together to solve it, with alternating trial days or maybe one leading investigation and the other court
there'll be a moment where apollo can't help for whatever reason and this is athenas big breakthrough indepdence moment as she solves this bit alone
also guest prosecutor franzy von karma; reveal she was the mentor of previous prosecutor (maybe on the bench with her? why has this not been a thing other than dgs3-3 capcom.)
solves it's not nick or trucy, all of them gain confidence within each other and themselves
game over everyone's happy

hi! if you saw me scroll through all your posts until they stopped loading because i adore your art… no you didn’t i’m normal and have no brainrot
but i wanted to say i love your drawing so much!! and it’s not just the art style, although that is absolutely incredible, it’s all the little stories and worlds you build into everything - you have an incredible creative mind and i thank you for feeding me
i did have two additional Qs:
1. have you seen the aa5 concept art of phoenix with a goatee? just putting it out there (cause you seem like the kinda person who would explode with delight at that, and it isn’t a spoiler)
2. having scrolled until things stopped loading… where should i go to watch/read mob psycho? (i’d never heard of it in my life but your brainrot is contagious i think)
love you so much!! /p
God bless <3
I…have NEVER been more SAD about completely missing and ignoring an ask I‘M SO SORRY WAAAH T-T
Your words,,,they mean 💞💖oh so much to me💖💞 ourgh I can‘t describe how happy i am,, you wrote so much,,,just for ME?! 💞💘ough /pos
Ahem…but to answer your asks:
1. you‘re talking to the PROUD owner of MANY ace attorney art books (like…admittedly I‘ve spent too much money on these) so YES I HAVE SEEN GOATEE PHOENIX he makes me giggle. To those who do not know him:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
✨Goatee Phoenix✨
(I‘m personally always even MORE amused by „Phoenix who‘s wearing a chess piece from Edgeworths chess game“ but that might just be the shipping brainrot)
Also…g…green proto-Phoenix
Tumblr media
Been meaning to make fanart of him…
And 2. ! I can HIGHLY recommend the Mob Psycho 100 anime! (The manga art style … is a little…special to say the least) BUT the animation of the anime is SO GOOD and very beautiful!! And the story and characters just OUGH /POS!!!
From what I know it‘s on crunchyroll and Netflix and probably a bunch of other website ahem 🏴‍☠️ who said that
So yeah thank you so much for rambling at me and letting me ramble at you in return AHHH tumblr is so fun and cool and sweet 💞✨

I haven’t played all of AA4 yet but I was thinking a lot about how uneasy the first case made me feel (in a good way) and I finally figured out why. (AA 4-1 spoilers btw) Part of it of course is the overall scheme: what happened 7 years ago and what are the answers to all these unresolved questions. But I genuinely don’t think I’ve seen a more accurate depiction of how I experienced GAD and social anxiety than I have with Apollo Justice.
Thankfully, I have learned to stand up for myself and I’ve controlled the majority of my anxiety but I can very clearly see that Apollo has not done that, at least yet. I am hoping hoping hoping we get to see him grow in this game because I know that AA5 and 6 won’t do that justice (lol). All throughout the first case, Apollo rarely spoke for himself. He was very much a follower and wanted approval, ergo he was very easy to manipulate. Kristoph and Phoenix both recognized this about him and were able to both use Apollo as their own puppets. He followed Kristoph’s orders whenever he gave them (‘expose phoenix’s lies’ ‘don’t embarrass me’) but he also was very willing to follow Phoenix’s orders too (‘point on the map for us’ ‘name the fourth person/killer’ ‘accuse Kristoph’). He followed who he thought was seeking the truth but he had to be told that doing these actions was for the truth.
I never was manipulated in court like Apollo experienced, but I was VERY quick to abandon plans for something else or act in ways if someone told me to. I remember sometimes even saying yes to things that made me super uncomfortable because I didn’t think for myself and didn’t want to disappoint or make anyone mad. And you can tell that Apollo really looked up to both Kristoph and Phoenix in that trial. He wasn’t sure who to believe so he followed both simultaneously until at the end when he realized both were assholes. I LOVE the unease I felt during the first case. It felt so real to me how Apollo was able to be so easily manipulated and how that was able to be used as a very interesting way to set up a new game and protagonist.
It’s amplified especially if you played all the past Phoenix Wright games. Hell, I finished PLvsPW an hour before picking up AA4 and that really influenced how much I wanted to also follow and believe Phoenix. So I absolutely love how this trial was used not only to play with the heart and mind of Apollo, but the players as well. There’s less reason to follow Kristoph since the players don’t have the same bond Kristoph and Apollo have since this was our first time meeting him, but because he’s our boss and he’s standing at the defense with us like Mia has, that adds to his credibility. Which is even better that Phoenix took Kristoph’s spot behind the defense bench when Kristoph was summoned to the stand. “Don’t believe that other guy, look at where he is now. Believe me instead, the person who just left that same spot.” You want to believe him, it’s Phoenix Wright! Teaching us the ways just like Mia. But what he’s actually done is replace Kristoph as the supposed voice of reason in Apollo’s ear. Yes that’s the spot for mentors, but does every mentor have your best intentions in mind? Are you able to distinguish genuine advice versus motivated advice?
I am truly fascinated and captivated by the writing. You can tell how much Shu Takumi has grown as a writer compared to the original AA1. I am so excited to play the rest of this game.

oblig dual destinies post
i finished the base game of dual destinies today, as in, everything but the dlc case. but the dlc case i assume is kind of a, er, side adventure that won't change much about my opinion of the main narrative, so here we go. spoilers for the first 5 cases
well that wasn't very good was it
things i did like
number one top spot MVP honourable mention goes to aura blackquill. aura is a great character, extremely my type of character, and her story was pretty interesting. every time aura was on screen i was having a good time. i cannot believe they hid the best, canon ace attorney toxic yuri in its worst game (that i've played so far). obviously wish we saw more of aura, more of aurametis, and more of aura with athena, but what we did get was honestly pretty good and much, much more explicit than i ever expected this franchise to get. i am a dog being tricked into taking a pill because it was hidden in a spoon of peanut butter.
i also liked athena. i was predisposed to like her because all the major female characters in this franchise start with a buff for me, but i did think her over the top exuberant competitive go-getter attitude coupled with the PTSD flashback sprites were a pretty good combo. i think she was unequivocally the star of this game, and i think we should have played her for a lot more of it. her power is goofy as all hell and mood matrix isn't a great minigame, but, well, uh, it's dual destinies i have to adjust my expectations somewhere.
i like that phoenix got his badge back. i can critique all the ways it played out, because you can critique just about everything in this game to the moon(rock) and back, but like. fundamentally. i like this choice and i'm glad it happened. i also like that we got to see edgeworth and pearl and got a letter from maya. it seems obvious this is the franchise trying to course correct after a rough reception to aa4, but frankly i don't really care, because i do think aa4 fucked up there. i liked aa4 and i think it was a better game than this; i also think it's quite a bummer of a game and in many places a middle finger to fans of the trilogy, so, i'll take the olive branches DD is offering me. 🤷🏼‍♀️
fullbright started off annoying to me but i did warm to him. there's one bit in case 3 where he and athena just cheer "in justice we trust!!!" back and forth that made me laugh. i thought the idea of the big bad being the friendly cop was pretty good. more on that later.
turnabout academy was dumb as hell (affectionate) and i liked it and the npcs were mostly really fun and/or funny. i love you aa5 klavier you hot washed up mess. somehow dual destinies made me more invested in klavier than aa4 did.
things i did not like
where do i start
jk, actually, the first place to start is Why The Hell Can't I Play This Game. writing and characterization and everything aside, this game is SO disinterested in being a game. i can't click stuff. characters autonomously solve puzzles on my behalf without even giving me a second to think of them. the minigames are reduced. investigation days are dull because i can't click anything. it weakens the characterization of the player and the companion character because you don't get their inane chatter. characters don't react to evidence being presented in interesting ways.
the attention to detail and love that went in to so many facets of the trilogy that made it so beloved are just not present here. i don't know what the issue was, rushed dev time or what was going on, but the wrong corners were cut. i made a separate post aout this example because it's so galling: in 1-4 if you try to present the photo of gregory's body to edgeworth, you get custom dialogue where maya intervenes and tells phoenix off for trying to show miles his dead dad. in 5-5 if you present photos of aura's murder to athena she reacts with the same generic disinterest dialogue she gives every other piece of evidence.
the characterization of the returning characters, ie not the ones new to dual destinies like athena and co, is at best watered down and one-note, and at worst out of character. i said i was happy to see edgeworth, and i stand by that overall; but his behaviour in the trial in 5-5 is like madlib edgeworth dialogue, half-hearted fanfic rather than anything to convince you it's a character who lived through the trilogy. phoenix is dumbed down and it's particularly noticeable coming off of aa4, where NPC phoenix was a fucking galaxybrained 5D chess puppeteer who was always one step ahead of everyone, and now he's like, incapable of making basic deductions. all dual destinies phoenix knows is eat hot chip be bisexual and bluff. boring, weak writing. he barely even reacts to trucy being kidnapped. perhaps because trucy is no longer a character and instead is just one extended "teen girl says the word panties" joke.
apollo... lmao... i hate to say it but i don't think apollo should've been in this game. i think his fans would be right to say that he deserved a sequel and that was what was set up by aa4, but all he does in this game is compete for the spotlight with athena, and lose. athena's story is the main story of this game and it is hindered by the detours DD has to take to include apollo; apollo, meanwhile, doesn't even really get anything of substance. we see him mourn a friend we never met and go off on a sidequest we don't partake in. the rift between the WAA would be really interesting if they... wrote it better, or let it sit longer, or let any character react to it for longer than ten seconds.
which gets to the most frustrating thing about this game: there are a lot of pretty good ideas here, hidden under layers of uninteractive "gameplay" and clunky writing that misses its emotional beats. the dark age of the law is a hilarious term but the justice system in AA IS super mega fucked up and that's a fine subject for the game to tackle, until they start pretending it's somehow *new* and that for some reason a prosecutor being convicted of murder was the final straw (ignore all the OTHER prosecutors who were convicted of murder in the golden age). the finale case you can practically FEEL capcom breathing down its shoulder, desperate to right the ship of the IP, scrambling to put together pieces that worked in the past.
but despite athena's backstory being probably the most compelling part of the game, it's hard to shake the feeling that we're getting a remix of turnabout goodbyes, except, well, worse. and that feeling is exacerbated by phoenix and edgeworth, who lived that case, never having or expressing any feelings to suggest they ... lived that case. on paper, edgeworth prosecuting a child who killed a parent by mistake is really interesting! but DD doesn't do anything with it. i actually really like fullbright being the phantom, and if i hadn't been spoiled by fandom, i think i would've been surprised. but that twist is undermined by the reveal that actually the character we knew was ... um... an amorphous shapeshifting blob with no independent identity, there's no sense of real betrayal between him and blackquill bc he's not a real person and blackquill was lying about trusting him so like ... who cares...
in conclusion
i see a lot of the shared DNA with investigations 1, and i have a lot of the same complaints. fun new characters, albeit underwritten; disappointing characterization from returning characters; in aai i found the puzzles frustrating, whereas here they felt nonexistent. at least aai1 had really cute pixel art and let me click stuff, though. shrek meme they don't even have investigating.
i am saying aai1, because i haven't played aai2 yet, and fandom swears up and down it's way better. but i have to be honest. what are the odds that of the four ace attorney games this guy wrote, three of them suck and one is a banger... i guess i'll find out in september when the port comes out :P or maybe when i play SOJ next i'll love it too. stay tuned

i'm slowly playing the first ace attorney trilogy and i want to read your fics but i don't know half of the characters in them. i'm on the fifth (extra?) episode of the first game. when would you say i can start reading
oh wow i'm honored that you want to read my fics!!! i'm a terrible person to ask since i started reading fanfic for ace attorney long before knowing what was going on and piecing things together (like i only saw the first two cases and a tiny bit of turnabout samurai before diving in) so i am probably not the person to ask
but!! if you care about spoilers, under the cut i organized my fics by the games they spoil up to. which made me realize how much stuff i write in one specific area
right now i think the only one you can read spoiler free is turbulent golden skies if you're staying spoiler free!! you can also read the first chapter of dedications if you'd like, though the second chapter has an aa2 character
i hope that you're enjoying the trilogy!! and rfta because it's a long case but i love what it adds to the story. i hope if you ever get the chance to read any of my fics you enjoy them!! 💞💞
the game each fic is next is where it spoils up to, aka something listed for aa3 may spoil 1 and 2 as well as possible spoilers for the entirety of aa3!
aa1: turbulent golden skies
aa2: none whoops
aa3: the webs we weave; beautiful little fool
plvspw: birds of a feather
aai: none
aai2: next up forever (forever second in line)
aa4: final call; red tape and the pieces of youth [as of right now]; black, bitter, and a splash of cream; a foolish precedent; a turn about the thrift store (gonna find something that fits); one thousand one hundred ninety [very minor]; the safety of a dinner; stay till the a.m.; how to care for your slender palm lily; another four o'clock on a friday; cat and mouse; wildflower summers and fresh-cut bouquets [has aa5 character]; ascension, decent, and the landings in between; trust falls; phenyl oxalate ester; a little spring cleaning; inch by inch; phosphorous sulfide and the guidebooks we set ablaze; an experimentation in thermal equilibrium; da capo al coda; salty ramen and the upright fool
aa5: rsvp with a plus-one
aa6: one hundred and twenty miles (plus some for backroads) [so minor. could probably be after aa5 tbh]
dgs: none
dgs 2: steep for two minutes; the hunt for an invention of much importance; till our ribs get tough

For the character ask thing, Apollo Justice -- 1, 8, 12,15, 25?
Thanks, Elves!! <3 <3 <3
Just a reminder: I haven't played AA5-6, I got some glimpses of spoilers, but not much. So reader(s), please, take this into account and don't spoil me! :'D
Tumblr media
1. Why do you like or dislike this character?
I think Apollo has a lot of potential both with his backstory and what he can become. I really like his dynamic with a lot of characters (Kristoph, Trucy, Phoenix and Klavier mostly), it shows that he isn't a carbon copy/discount Phoenix. I appreciate that, while he did admire Phoenix, he became a lawyer because he felt it was his calling and that he's truly committed to what he believed in. No matter how much he admired his mentor Kristoph, and was grateful towards him, he didn't hide the truth nor tried to justify what he did.
8. What's something the fandom does when it comes to this character that you despise?
Hmm... I guess it's when Apollo suffers from the "uke syndrome", y'know, when the writers reduce a male character to a poor little fragile thing who needs to be rescued by his manly top boyfriend? (like a lot of other male characters, and ironically the female characters get hatred for that but I'll stop here).
But the worst is how, in some stories, I saw Apollo becoming so petty! Carrying an act of cruel revenge and/or manipulating for some things that... okay, weren't okay, but not that bad?! And if they wanted him to get back at the other, he didn't need to go that far? Seriously?!
12. What's a headcanon you have for this character?
Apollo is very good with a skateboard and rollerblades. When he uses them, he can easily go as fast, even faster than some people who are on a bike. He knows some tricks, most he learnt out of pragmatism or spontaneously and not to impress (but he still likes the praises!). He'd like to have a motorbike someday instead of a car.
15. What's your favourite ship for this character? (Doesn't matter if it's canon or not.)
Klapollo! Not the most original, I admit, and for once I really like a popular pairing <3 ... even if it's not always easy to find the characterization I love most x'D
I think it's a pairing that has a lot of potential and where a lot of genres can get mixed in it (another reason to love it): fluff, angst, fun, complex, dark, sexy...
25. What was your first impression of this character? How about now?
As stated in the first question, before playing the game, I was a bit afraid to get a less good version of Phoenix. So I was pleasantly surprised to see that Apollo truly had his own personality. Back then, he striked me as a clumsy, well-meaning young man who had a temper and a very good sense of observation. Now, I see a righteous young man, who tries hard (a bit too hard sometimes) to be more "adult" and to do his job properly, and who (ironically or not) wears his heart on his sleeves.
